Membership: From a preliminary list of 109 members in 1897 numbers quickly grew to around 250, and by May 1900 to 264. Thereafter numbers increased only slowly, to reach 279 in 1914. Membership rose more quickly after the First World War, to reach 389 in 1928, 417 in 1930, 440 in 1935, and 479 in 1939. Numbers grew again after the Second World War, reaching 673 in 1951, but falling to 578 in 1956, to 546 in 1957, and to 527 in 1965. Numbers have fluctuated since, but stood at 507 at the beginning of 1997.
